How Base64 Works (and When to Use It)
Base64 represents every 3 bytes of binary data as 4 printable characters from the alphabet A–Z a–z 0–9 + /. That makes the output roughly 33% larger than the input, but safe to embed in text-only containers such as JSON, YAML, XML, data URIs, and HTTP headers.
Data URIs
Embed images and fonts directly in CSS or HTML as data:image/png;base64,…
APIs & JWTs
JWT header and payload segments are Base64URL-encoded JSON.
Email (MIME)
Attachments are Base64-encoded so binary data survives text-based mail servers.
URL Encoding: Which Characters Get Escaped?
Percent-encoding keeps URLs unambiguous. Reserved characters (&, =, ?, #, /) and non-ASCII characters are replaced by %XX byte sequences.
| Character | Encoded | Common context |
|---|---|---|
| space | %20 | query strings & paths |
| + | %2B | literal plus in values (a bare + means space in forms) |
| & | %26 | parameter separators |
| = | %3D | key=value delimiter |
| # | %23 | fragment start |
| é | %C3%A9 | UTF-8 two-byte sequence |
